Going Digital with Confidence in an Innovative Landscape

The use of digital payments has accelerated in recent years as customers seek faster, cheaper, and more seamless modes of payments. These benefits are not only being enjoyed in the domestic market but have also extended to cross-border payments with ASEAN being a hive of activity. Alongside this development, the risks posed by fraud and cyber threats on digital payment transactions have also heightened. The session aims to dissect the direction for digitalisation in payments over the coming years and what more can be done by financial institutions and authorities. This is while managing the risks that may threaten public confidence in digital payments.

A Vision for Social Protection

Social protection is a vital component of any government’s policy toolkit to address issues faced by vulnerable groups. This is further underscored by experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, where these types of policies were vital during the imposition of Movement Control Orders. This session aims to discuss the key gaps in Malaysia’s delivery of social protection and the potential for reforms to ensure it can sustainably and effectively address the needs of vulnerable groups both in the present and future.

Demystifying Monetary Policy: Key Considerations and Challenges

Over the past year, global central banks have sharply tightened their monetary policies to address the high and persistent inflationary pressures, following the strong recovery in labour markets, strengthening demand and elevated cost pressures. In doing so, the key challenge is balancing the objectives of price stability and supporting growth amid lingering uncertainties, such as the ongoing geopolitical conflicts and fragilities in the global financial system. Complicating the picture, it is being heavily debated whether higher interest rates is the suitable tool in addressing price pressures, or even whether they are exacerbating burdens faced by the public.

Islamic Finance: Global Connectivity and Innovation

This session aims to highlight key developments in Islamic finance industry including roles of the MIFC Leadership Council, its progress and ongoing initiatives. In addition, the discussion will cover the roles of the Centralised Shariah Advisory Authorities in promoting harmonisation of Shariah rulings between Malaysia and other jurisdictions as well as its future direction. Panellists will also dissect the key challenges in Islamic finance development arising from over-reliance of current practices on certain Shariah contracts.

Navigating Ringgit Exchange Rate Dynamics

In 2022, the ringgit experienced a period of sustained depreciation against the US dollar. While small movements in the ringgit exchange rate are common, large fluctuations in the level can create lasting impact for businesses, households and the economy. This discussion aims to cover on the importance of a flexible exchange rate to the economy and also exchange rate pass through to inflation in Malaysia, and development of the onshore market over the years.

Driving Insurance & Takaful Digitalisation: A Digital Motor Claims Journey

In 2022, BNM continued to call on general insurers and takaful operators to improve customers’ claims experience and outcomes by going digital, in line with aspirations set out in the Financial Sector Blueprint 2022-2026 (the Blueprint). This includes implementation of digital roadside assistance, towards achieving three desired outcomes -- timeliness, transparency, and transformative customer experience. Going forward, BNM will continue to engage and collaborate with key stakeholders to pursue key initiatives outlined in the Blueprint.
