Past Series of Malaysian Currency

Banknotes and coins issued by BNM

The authority to issue currency is vested in BNM under The Central Bank of Malaya Ordinance, 1958, which formed the Central Bank of Malaya (Bank Negara Tanah Melayu) in January 1959. However, the Board of Commissioners of Currency Malaya and British Borneo continued to issue currency until 12 June 1967.

Later, BNM took control as the sole issuer of currency in Malaysia. Old Malayan notes remained in circulation alongside new Malaysian banknotes until 16 January 1969, when they were demonetised.
