Members of the public are advised to exchange their defaced currency notes, tampered currency coins and demonetised currency at any financial institutions.

The financial institutions will:
(i) compensate the public on the same day for straight forward cases of defaced currency notes; and
(ii) refer to BNM for assessment on doubtful cases of defaced currency notes, tampered currency coins and demonetised currency. BNM will compensate the public at a later date after assessment.

The value of the money exchanged will depend on the physical condition of the money and the face value. For more details, kindly refer to this page.

What To Do If You Get / Receive Counterfeit Money Counterfeit banknotes have no value.

If you are in doubt about the authenticity of a banknote when making a transaction, follow these simple steps:

1. Minimize contact with suspected fake banknotes,
2. Do not write, scratch, cut or change the display of suspected counterfeit banknotes,
3. Do not redistribute banknotes that are suspected to be fake,
4. Keep banknotes that are suspected to be fake in an envelope or plastic envelope,
5. Record the information on how you received the suspected fake banknote in a separate paper,
6. Immediately report to the police if you find or find any suspected counterfeit banknotes.
