On 18 June 2008, Khazanah Nasional Berhad (Khazanah) issued a media statement on the resignation of the Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia from its Board. The Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia was appointed to the Board of Khazanah on 10 July 2000. The Governor had submitted the letter of her resignation from the Board of Khazanah, and this was approved by the Prime Minister of Malaysia on 21 April 2008.
Khazanah has in the more recent times become active in investments in financial institutions both in Malaysia and abroad. The Governor's decision to resign from the Board of Khazanah is to avoid any potential conflict of interest arising from the Central Bank's role as the financial supervisory and regulatory authority.
