In delivering Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM)’s mandate, BNM’s regulatory powers and responsibilities include powers to take supervisory and/or enforcement actions against financial institutions and other parties that contravene the laws administered by BNM. This is essential to reinforce a strong compliance culture and safeguard the interests of the broader public, emphasising consumer protection.  

Hence, BNM publishes the Enforcement Approach document that outlines BNM’s comprehensive enforcement regime. The key contents of the document include: 

1. Overview of BNM’s jurisdiction and the scope of its enforcement-related powers; 
2. Establishment and role of the Enforcement Committee; 
3. Details of the range of enforcement actions employed/adopted and general principles in determining the computation of monetary penalties; and 
4. Approach concerning the disclosure of enforcement actions taken. 

This document aims to enhance awareness of BNM’s approach in administering its enforcement powers. The increased transparency should foster confidence in BNM’s role as a regulator and supervisor of the financial system.
