Bank Negara Malaysia announced today the issuance of commemorative coins in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO).

Launched by YB Datuk Seri M. Saravanan, the Minister of Human Resources for Malaysia, the commemorative coins will be issued in two denominations:

1. Coloured Sterling Silver Commemorative Coin (proof)

A coin made of sterling silver with 92.5 purity measuring 31 grams in weight. It has a face value of RM10 to be sold at RM253 a piece. The mintage quantity is 1,000 pieces.

2. Nordic Gold Brilliant Uncirculated (B.U) Commemorative Coin

A coin made of copper and several other metals measuring 8.5 grams in weight. It has a face value of RM1 to be sold at RM13.20 a piece. The mintage quantity is 10,000 pieces.

Marzunisham Omar, Deputy Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia said, “We are pleased to issue these beautifully designed commemorative coins to mark the occasion of SOCSO’s golden anniversary. These unique designs reflect and celebrate SOCSO's continued service and dedication to all SOCSO’s insured persons.”

Coin design

The design of the commemorative coins is as follows:

Obverse

The text “SAMBUTAN JUBLI EMAS PERKESO” is inscribed around the upper circumference of the coin, as well as a tagline “PRIHATIN LIMA DEKAD DAN SELAMANYA” at the lower circumference of the coin. The centre of the coin shows the image of an opened umbrella from the top formed by 50 monogrammed figures adapted from SOCSO's official logo, which symbolises 50 years of providing protection to the people.

Reverse

The text “BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA" as the issuing authority of numismatic coins is featured at the upper circumference of the coin, followed by the official logo of the PERKESO50 celebration in the middle against the background of a 3-dimensional wave design. The face value of 10 RINGGIT and 1 RINGGIT are inscribed at the lower circumference of the respective coin.

These commemorative coins are also available for sale in a set of 2. The set of 2 is priced at RM308 each inclusive of 10% Sales and Services Tax (SST). Each set comprises of one coloured sterling silver proof coin and one Nordic gold proof coin. A total of 1,000 sets are available for purchase. Please refer to Appendix I for the detailed specifications of these commemorative coins.

Sale of commemorative coins

To provide a fair opportunity for the public to buy these limited-edition coins, each individual will only be allowed to purchase a Set of 2, a coloured silver coin (proof) and up to five Nordic gold (B.U) coins. In the event of oversubscription, balloting will take place. Further information on ordering, payment and delivery will be made available to the public through an announcement via BNM website on 17 November 2021.
