Bank Negara Malaysia is issuing commemorative coins to commemorate the hosting of the ASEAN 2015 Summits in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The ASEAN 2015 Summits pave the way for the establishment of an ASEAN Community, a key milestone towards realising ASEAN’s shared vision of a peaceful, stable and prosperous region. The three community blueprints that form the basis of the overall ASEAN community comprised of the ASEAN Political Security Community (APSC), ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC). The Community reflects the vigorous spirit of togetherness and strong bond between the ten ASEAN member states and their people. These commemorative coins were launched by Y.A.B. Tan Sri Dato' Haji Muhyiddin bin Mohd. Yassin, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia today at Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

Specifications of the commemorative coins are as follows:

1. Gold Commemorative Coin (proof)

This proof coin is made of gold with 99.99 purity and weighs 7.96 grams. It has a face value of RM100 and will be sold at RM 1,800 a piece. The mintage quantity is 500 pieces.

2. Coloured Silver Commemorative Coin (proof)

This is the first 10-sided polygon shaped coin with coloured images on both sides issued by Bank Negara Malaysia. This proof coloured coin is made of Fine Silver with 99.9 purity and weighs 31.10 grams. It has a face value of RM 10 and will be sold at RM200 a piece. The mintage quantity is 5,000 pieces.

3. Nordic Gold Brilliant Uncirculated (B.U) Commemorative Coin

The Nordic Gold (B.U) coin has a face value of RM1 and will be sold at RM10 each. The mintage quantity is 25,000 pieces.

These commemorative coins are also available in sets of 3 and sets of 2. The Set of 3 comprises of the gold, coloured silver and nordic gold proof coins. It will be sold at RM2,100 per set with 2,000 sets available. The Set of 2 comprises of the coloured silver and nordic gold proof coins. This set will be sold at RM250 per set with 2,000 sets available. Detailed specifications of the coins are as Appendix I below.

Coin Design

The design descriptive of the commemorative coins is as follows:

1. Obverse Side of the Coin

The centre of the coin shows the logo of ASEAN with ten (10) curves in a molecule loop representing the progress of ASEAN countries as well as to reflect the unity of the peoples from ASEAN communities. The words ASEAN 2015 MALAYSIA are on the upper circumference of the coin while the ASEAN theme for 2015 – OUR PEOPLE, OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR VISION is on the lower circumference of the coin.

2. Reverse Side of the Coin

The centre of the coin features the image of the hornbill with the motif bintang-bintang and the image of Bunga Raya in the background. The flags of the ten (10) ASEAN countries are depicted circling the centre of the coin. The words ‘Bank Negara Malaysia’ as the issuing authority of the commemorative coin are featured on the upper circumference of the coin while the face value of the coin is inscribed on the lower circumference.

Sales Outlets

These commemorative coins are issued by Bank Negara Malaysia and will be available for sale from 27 April 2015 at the Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery (MAG) located at Sasana Kijang, 2 Jalan Dato’ Onn, Kuala Lumpur and regional offices and branches located in Pulau Pinang, Johor Bahru, Kuala Terengganu, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching.
