What is a Mobile Application Scam?
It is when scammers are able to gain access to your phone once you have downloaded suspicious third party applications (e.g. .apk files). Scammers will use this access to read and delete your transaction alerts and/or OTP number.
What to look out for?
1. Online services or texts (e.g. SMS, whatsapp, telegram) asking you to download an application to your phone.
Be wary of clickable hyperlinks that redirects you to a site, or downloads an application to your phone. Banks will no longer send you any clickable hyperlinks via SMS!
2. The application is hosted on a non-official site.
Be careful when redirected to suspicious or non-official sites.
How to protect yourself?
1. Only download applications from your smartphone’s official application platforms (e.g. Google Play Store, App Store, Huawei App Gallery).
2. Don’t click on SMS hyperlinks coming from “banks”.
