What is Phishing?
It is a fraudulent attempting to trick you to reveal your credentials to the scammer. This can be via links sent via SMS or emails, or fake websites that look just like the real ones.
If you key in your personal information or banking details in these phishing sites, you risk your banking information being stolen by the scammers.
What to look out for?
1. Suspicious website hyperlinks.
Phishing sites are designed to look like the real ones, with almost an identical online address.
2. Unsolicited SMS/message/email with clickable hyperlinks.
These links will likely redirect you to a phishing site.
How to protect yourself?
1. Be extra careful with clickable hyperlinks from unsolicited SMS/message/email.
Do not click on any hyperlink sent via SMS by a “bank”. Banks will no longer do so.
2. Always log on your banking account via your bank’s official website.
This minimises the risks of you keying in your personal banking details on a phishing site.
3. Pay close attention to the web link before proceeding with your banking activities.
Given that the web link will likely be quite identical, do look out for subtle differences. For example, 0 in place of an ‘o’; @ in place of ‘a’; ‘bnmm’ instead of ‘bnm’.
